Staffordshire-based KMF Group Ltd, one of the largest sheet metal engineering and metal fabrication companies in the UK, has invested £1.2 million in two new laser profiling machines supplied by Luton-based Trumpf Ltd.

The Trumpf Trulaser 3030 (L95) ‘state of the art’ machines will increase cutting speeds, reduce operating costs, and allow for a greater range of materials to be processed. They have replaced two existing fibre lasers which were acquired in 2012 and have been working 24/7 ever since.

With more capacity to cut through heavier gauge and a larger range of materials, the new lasers can cut sheets of 25mm of mild steel, 20mm of stainless steel and 20mm in aluminium. They can also cut through 8mm copper and brass sheets.

Commercial director Keith Nicholl said: “The new lasers mean our throughput is much faster, and we can continue to offer our customers competitive solutions at a time when resource costs are rising. They are also more accurate and allow us to build on our reputation for producing consistent quality products in large quantities. After an incredibly productive start to the year and in line with our continued growth, the new lasers are certainly helping us to accommodate our customers and their ambitions.”

The machines are the latest generation of fibre lasers and join a range of high-end Trumpf sheet metal processing equipment at KMF’s 255,000ft² facility in Newcastle-under-Lyme. Laser profiling is the first physical stage in the processing of sheet metal-based products and so any gains are felt throughout the manufacturing process.
