The transport operator
AMT Genova (Azienda Mobilità e Trasporti SpA) has awarded Solaris (a member of the
CAF Group) an order to supply a total of 112 18m trolleybuses. The contract, which is worth more than 100 million euros, is the single largest order for articulated trolleybuses to date for Solaris, which said its extensive experience in developing and manufacturing this type of vehicle, having already supplied more than 2,000 trolleybuses, was one of the key factors that ATM Genova considered when placing the order.
Aside from a traditional electric drive, the vehicles will also be equipped with batteries, giving them more autonomy and allowing them to cover long distances without the need to be connected to the network. The batteries will be charged while a vehicle is in service, supplied by the catenary by means of In-Motion-Charging (IMC) technology.
Solaris’s business relationship with AMT Genova dates to 2013, the most recent example being an order for 30 electric buses; these were delivered in 2022 and are currently in operation. The Italian operator plans to achieve a fully electric vehicle fleet by 2025.
Meanwhile, Solaris is to supply 10 hydrogen buses to another European city. In this case, the German company Rheinbahn Düsseldorf has ordered the vehicles, which are scheduled for delivery in 2025. This contract is for the Solaris Urbino 12 model and will incorporate ‘state of the art’ technology for this type of vehicle — including a wide range of systems that meet GSR2 requirements and ensure the highest levels of safety for both passengers and drivers. Furthermore, these buses will run on green hydrogen produced purely from renewable electricity.
Solaris says its hydrogen-powered buses are achieving great success on the German market, as proven by the current high order backlog. Numerous contracts that have been secured in recent months with cities that include Hamburg, Frankfurt, Cologne, Duisburg, and Gross Gerau.
