Business Secretary Vince Cable and the Motorsport Industry Association (MIA) have welcomed the news that Honda will base its European racing operation in Milton Keynes from June 2014, as it prepares for its participation in Formula One next year (it will supply engines to McLaren). The new facility will be located in the new R&D centre of partner company Mugen Euro.
Mr Cable said: “We very much welcome Honda’s announcement. It follows the launch of the Government’s automotive industrial strategy, which underlines its commitment to working with world-class companies and organisations, including those in motor-sport. The decision by Honda emphasises the importance of the UK’s Motorsport Valley as a world-renowned centre of excellence for technological innovation and product development.”
MIA CEO Chris Aylett said: “This decision by Honda is a strong vote of confidence in the strength of the UK supply chain in motor-sport engineering. The move will see UK engineers employed, investment in premises and operations and valuable new business growth for UK suppliers. The UK automotive strategy, created after input from MIA members and the wider industry, is on the right path. It is sure to attract more investment and jobs to the UK in ‘advanced propulsion’ activity.”
