Spanish Air Force signs Eurofighter engine dealEurojet Turbo GmBH (Eurojet), the consortium responsible for the EJ200 engines installed in the Eurofighter Typhoon, has signed a contract with the NATO Eurofighter and Tornado Management Agency (NETMA) to provide 59 new EJ200 engines for the Spanish Air Force.

The EJ200 engine, a product of collaboration between Rolls-Royce, MTU Aero Engines, ITP Aero and Avio Aero, has consistently demonstrated exceptional performance since its first production delivery. Rolls-Royce will play a pivotal role in the engine module production, contributing its unmatched expertise and innovation to meet the demands of the Spanish Air Force.

The contract was signed at Getafe Air Force Base in Madrid by the general manager of NETMA, Air Vice Marshall Simon Ellard (ret.), CEO of Eurojet Ralf Breiling, and covers EJ200 engines for the Eurofighter Typhoon fighter aircraft in the second phase of the Halcón acquisition project.

The engines, which will be assembled at the ITP Aero’s facility in Ajalvir, are scheduled for delivery from 2029. With its unprecedented performance record, combined with multi-role capability and highest availability at competitive life-cycle costs, the future-proofed EJ200 engine is considered ideal to meet air force requirements. Since delivery of the first production engine in 2003, over 1,400 EJ200 production engines have been delivered to air force customer fleets of nine nations, and the EJ200 engine has achieved in excess of 1.5 million engine flying hours.

Supporting operational readiness

Chris Davie, Rolls-Royce director of UK and international mature programmes, said: “At Rolls-Royce, we are proud to contribute to the Eurojet consortium with the EJ200 representing outstanding and innovative capabilities that ensures our allies maintain their operational edge. This new contract reflects the confidence placed in our technology and reinforces our commitment to innovation, partnership and supporting operational readiness for modern air forces.”

Mr Breiling said: “The confidence that Spain and the core nations continue to show in the EJ200 engine and the Eurofighter platform is inspiring. The EJ200 as part of the Eurofighter Typhoon provides a world-class, combat proven asset for the Spanish Air Force. This order continues the deep partnership between European industry and government to develop and maintain this technology edge, which is key to the ongoing relevance of European defence.”

Air Vice Marshall Simon Ellard concluded: “The signing of today’s contract finalises a successful collaborative procurement effort to provide 59 engines for Spain. The EJ200 is a key asset that delivers cutting edge performance and powers the Eurofighter Typhoon to secure our skies and reinforce NATO’s deterrence capabilities.”
