YLEM helps Gestamp reduce gas consumption significantlySalford-based YLEM Energy Ltd, a leading independent renewable power generation specialist, has partnered with Gestamp, a global manufacturer of metal components for the automotive industry, to install a smart heating control system which has not only saved Gestamp £173,000 in annual gas savings at its Llanelli facility in Wales, but is also helping the company to make progress towards its broader energy efficiency and sustainability goals.

YLEM installed an advanced smart heating control system powered by the E-magine Control platform which integrates seamlessly with Gestamp’s existing gas-fired radiant tube heating infrastructure, introducing intelligent zone-based controls and automation. Previously, Gestamp operated a large-scale factory equipped with a gas-powered Ambirad heating system, which relied heavily on manual operation.

Now, each heating zone is managed by dedicated controllers linked to indoor temperature sensors. These sensors continuously monitor room conditions and automatically activate or deactivate heating based on real-time demand. The system features two distinct setpoints, one for occupied hours and another for unoccupied periods, with the flexibility to apply custom schedules and exception overrides. There have been substantial improvements in heating consistency and employee comfort since the introduction of the E-magine Control platform and reduced reliance on manual intervention and monitoring.

Energy efficiency and sustainability goals

Ian Gadsby, managing director of YLEM, said: “It has been great to work with Gestamp to help work toward its energy efficiency and sustainability goals. By leveraging YLEM Energy Optimise’s expertise in smart building controls, Gestamp has modernised its factory heating system and achieved measurable gains in efficiency and cost savings, resulting in improvements in heating consistency and employee comfort, as well as wider recognition and approval by the Gestamp corporate energy efficiency team.”

Andrew Davies, Gestamp’s safety, health, environment and facilities manager, added: “Working with YLEM Energy Optimise has been a game-changer for us. The smart heating control system they implemented has dramatically improved the way we manage our factory environment. We have significantly reduced our gas consumption, improved comfort for our teams on the shopfloor, and cut down on the time our staff spend monitoring and adjusting heating manually.

“The system just works, intuitively and efficiently, and the savings speak for themselves. YLEM delivered a seamless installation and provided expert support throughout the process. We couldn’t be happier with the outcome.”
