This week, Oxfordshire will become the focal point for some of the UK’s most advanced automotive manufacturers and suppliers as the
Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) hosts its ‘Regional Forum’. Against a backdrop of global trade tensions, a slower-than-anticipated shift to electrification, and mounting cost pressures, the event will highlight how companies in the South East of England are navigating challenges and unlocking new growth opportunities.
Fresh analysis from the SMMT underscores the sector’s significance to the region, revealing a £1.3 billion annual economic contribution and more than 17,000 jobs — representing one in every 11 UK automotive manufacturing roles. Since 2015, £1.4 billion has been invested in the South East, reinforcing its strategic importance to the national economy.
With a rich automotive heritage dating back to Brooklands in 1907, the region remains a powerhouse of production and innovation. Nearly 750 manufacturing firms call the South East home, including iconic names like Caterham, Gordon Murray Automotive, McLaren, Mini, and Rolls Royce, alongside Ford’s UK engine plant. The area is also a hub for cutting-edge R&D, motorsport engineering, and autonomous vehicle testing, bolstered by the Motorsport Valley and Cambridgeshire Innovation Corridor.
Mike Hawes, the SMMT’s chief executive, said: “We are delighted to bring the SMMT Regional Forum to the South East this year,” said “This region boasts deep automotive roots, a highly skilled workforce, and a significant economic footprint. With a focus on product innovation, the forum arrives at a pivotal moment as global investors determine where to build the next generation of electric, connected and automated vehicles.”
The forum’s agenda features two sessions led by industry leaders, including Dr Andy Harris of Wrightbus, Lisa Brankin of Ford of Britain, Louis Jones of DAF Trucks, and Ramona Dienel of BMW UK Manufacturing. They will be joined by SMMT’s senior team, including CEO Mike Hawes, to discuss the future of automotive manufacturing.
Representing over 800 UK automotive companies, the SMMT continues to provide vital support, networking, and advocacy for its members. Through flagship events like the
SMMT Summit and Electrified, and regional forums such as this, members have the opportunity to gain access to exclusive data, insights, and opportunities to strengthen their competitiveness and sustainability.
Regional Forum South East takes place at the Oxford Belfry Hotel in Thame, Oxfordshire, tomorrow (Wednesday 15 October). More information and registration details are available evia the website www.smmt.co.uk/event/regional-forum here.
