Silverstone Park and Akoje Gallery launch sculpture commission

Posted on 28 Jan 2026. Edited by: Jackie Seddon.
Silverstone Park and Akoje Gallery launch sculpture commission Silverstone Park has partnered with Akoje Gallery to commission two major outdoor sculptures by artist Cristina Morbi and her London studio Maetherea, bringing a new cultural dimension to the leading destination for advanced engineering, innovation and high‑performance technology businesses. The works, titled Land of Currents: Magnetic Field and Wind Rose, will explore how natural forces inspire technological development—particularly within the fields of motorsport and advanced engineering, which underpin Silverstone Park’s identity. Both installations are scheduled for completion in summer 2026 ahead of the British Grand Prix.

Akoje Gallery — co‑founded by England, British & Irish Lions and Saracens rugby captain Maro Itoje and Khalil Akar — is leading the commission as part of its wider Paint The Game initiative. The campaign aims to bridge sport, culture and education by using visual art to spark new conversations and celebrate the often overlooked creative narratives that sit behind elite sport. The partnership with Silverstone Park marks a significant step in connecting engineering and motorsport with the arts.

The two large‑scale pieces will form the first permanent artworks within a new sculpture trail across Silverstone Park. Managed by Federated Hermes, the Park is home to a growing community of cutting‑edge technology firms and benefits from its close proximity to Silverstone Circuit. The sculptures will draw heavily on the Park’s engineering heritage, using materials such as carbon fibre, reused steel and motorsport‑grade components, while also contributing to the area’s cultural and ecological landscape. Positioned near the main entrance to the Formula One circuit, they will be highlighted as part of the official visitor experience during race week.

Magnetic Field is conceived as an inhabitable compass structure that immerses visitors in the unseen forces that guide movement. Designed using magnetic materials and environmental engineering principles, it incorporates magnet‑responsive elements, ferrofluid visual effects and ecological features, including hyperaccumulator plants. Wind Rose will take the form of a radial, wind‑responsive installation constructed from flexible stainless‑steel rebars. Inspired by atmospheric mapping, the sculpture will translate airflow into visual movement, connecting themes of aerodynamics, navigation and performance—all central to both motorsport and environmental science.

Silverstone Art Trail

Silverstone Park and Akoje Gallery are encouraging involvement from local businesses, schools and individuals. They are inviting the donation or supply of off‑cut materials, such as hinges, carbon fibre and metal components, to embed authentic Silverstone Park materials into the sculptures. There is also an opportunity for contributors to share design ideas while the works remain in development, and for organisations to commission future installations as part of the emerging Silverstone Art Trail. More than public artworks, the sculptures aim to generate dialogue between disciplines—linking physics with creative exploration, motorsport with ecology, and heritage with technical progress. Designed to inspire students, residents, engineers and visitors, the works reflect the forward‑looking character of Silverstone Park and Akoje Gallery.

Cristina Morbi said: “The vision is to physically manifest the invisible forces – wind, magnetism, orientation – that drive both nature and engineering. We’re creating not just artworks, but landmarks that invite interaction, curiosity, and education.”

Maro Itoje added: “Akoje’s mission is to connect communities and industries through the power of art. With Silverstone Park, we’re building a unique platform that speaks to innovation, education, and heritage – all through sculpture.”

Sebastian Hayes, asset management director for Silverstone Park at Federated Hermes, said: “At Silverstone Park, we’re proud to be at the intersection of innovation, engineering, and creativity. This partnership with Akoje Gallery reflects our belief that technology and art share the same foundations – imagination, precision, and the drive to push boundaries. These sculptures will celebrate not only the ingenuity of our occupiers but also the collaborative spirit that defines this community.”
