Mirka’s ToolChanger advances robotic surface finishing

Mirka’s ToolChanger advances robotic surface finishingMirka UK is launching the Mirka ToolChanger, a new automated tool-changing system developed specifically for robotic sanding and polishing applications across a range of sectors. This new system has been developed to address one of the most persistent challenges in automated surface finishing, which is businesses having access to a product that enables fast and reliable tool switching without interrupting production.

The ToolChanger is a mechanical ‘plug and play’ system consisting of two modules. The upper unit is mounted on the robot arm and a lower unit is attached to the tool. The combination of both modules uses the robot’s own movement to lock and release tools.

This removes the need for external power, sensors or complex integration, which reduces manual intervention and keeps production lines running continuously as the ToolChanger enables robots to automatically switch between sanding and polishing tools.

Robotic sanding solutions

Alongside this, its ability to ‘plug and play’ means fast deployment in combination with the MirkaÒ AIROS range of sanders and polishers due to it not needing a custom wiring set-up, which increases productivity and reduces the capital outlay for businesses installing the system. It has also been designed to integrate smoothly with a wide range of AIROS robotic sanding solutions, which make it suitable for use across a multitude of sectors including automotive, aerospace, rail, and woodworking.

In addition, the secure mechanical locking ensures consistent performance of the sanding or polishing heads during demanding applications and the robust design makes it suitable for high wear environments. When it comes to safety, the ToolChanger’s construction minimises the risk of tool detachment or operator error.

Chris Brook, business Mirka UK’s transport and industry sector manager, concluded: “Tool-change downtime has been a persistent constraint in automated surface finishing. With the new Mirka ToolChanger, we have engineered a simple, robust solution that removes this barrier and allows manufacturers to keep lines running, improve process flexibility and get more out of their investment in robotic tools and the automated processes they have in place.”
