CAM boosts climbing-wall production Founded in Bulgaria in 1996, climbing-wall manufacturer Walltopia has so far completed projects in 42 countries. All manufacturing is carried out in its 8,000m2 production facility in Sofia, where PowerMill software from Delcam (www.delcam.com) is used to generate programs for a CMS five-axis milling centre that was acquired to machine larger parts.

Co-owner and general manager Ivaylo Penchev says: “Being a global leader in the manufacture of climbing walls, we like to work with the most innovative and competitive companies. In the CAM world, that means Delcam. We chose PowerMill because it provides a friendly interface, plus safe and highly efficient programs. It gives us all the possible strategies we need for five-axis machining.”

As well as allowing Walltopia to use all the capabilities of the CMS machine, PowerMill shortens the programming time by using templates and macro programming to generate tool-paths. In particular, specialised strategies for disk cutting have boosted productivity by replacing the previous manual approach.

Walltopia has the largest and most complete range of climbing-wall surfaces available in the world today, and it offers complete solutions, from project design through manufacture and assembly to route setting and staff training. It employs more than 300 people.
