Mec Com wins Siemens contractA fabrication specialist based in Hixon, Staffordshire, has won a £2.7 million order from the Siemens electronics group. Mec Com (www.mec-com.co.uk), which is part of the Midlands Assembly Network, announced the contract win during a visit by Stafford MP Jeremy Lefroy (pictured, right) to its 60,000sq ft facility.

The company has invested more than £500,000, creating a dedicated cell for final assembly and test of protection and control relays. Around 25 new jobs will be created immediately to deliver the five-year contract, including two team leaders, a quality engineer and a senior buyer.

Managing director Richard Bunce (pictured, left) said: “We’ve been actively targeting new business opportunities where we can add value from the design stage through to manufacture.

“This project was initially heading overseas, but we were able to prove to the customer that we can offer greater flexibility, reduced lead times and world-class quality. Naturally, we also have to be competitive, and the UK now is.”

Mec Com has increased its turnover from £5 million when it went into private ownership in 2000 to a record £12.5 million this year. Its export level is now nearly 40%, with the firm’s largest market being Germany.
