A surge in business levels has prompted A&S Tooling to add a Walter Helitronic Power multi-axis tool grinder to its shopfloor. Supplied by Warwick-based Walter Ewag UK Ltd (
www.walter-machines.com), this machine is equipped for ‘lights out’ unmanned running via the use of a robot loader and automatic wheel changer; it joins four other Helitronic machines — including another with a robot loader.
Director Jeff Smith says the latest investment in Walter tool-grinding technology was a straightforward cost-to-performance decision: “We wanted a machine that would help us meet our rising order book with minimal down-time after installation; with existing Helitronic tool grinders, we have a high level of commonality of control technology, as well as operator familiarity with the software and the machines.”
Leicester-based A&S Tooling processes a variety of standard and special-purpose tooling — mainly carbide — that is used across all market segments.
For his latest Helitronic Power, Mr Smith specified the optional high-speed work-head motor; this gives up to 750rev/min, which is required for cylindrical grinding tasks when producing ranges of step drills.
“We produce anything from one-offs through to batches of 300, often processing a mix of regrinds and new tools of the same designs and styles, in the same loadings.
“We’ve also installed Walter’s new clamping system, which has been designed and developed exclusively for the company’s Helitronic and Helicheck machines; it ensures quick and easy set-up and consistent accuracy for large-batch production.
“Operating the machines unmanned through the night means that the robot loaders and the automatic wheel changer play a key role in maximising machine utilisation.”
