'Green light' for long-rolling mills

'Green light' for long-rolling millsKorean steel maker Hyundai Steel (www.hyundai-steel.com) has issued the final acceptance certificates (FACs) for two long-rolling mills supplied by Primetals Technologies (www.primetals.com) to the Dangjin special-steel production facility.

The large bar mill incorporates a ‘duo reversing’ breakdown stand and a finishing train with rolling/sizing stands.

Designed to roll 1 million tonnes per year, this mill also provides billets to be further processed in the small bar and wire rod mill, which has a capacity of 800,000 tonnes (this mill also includes a breakdown and intermediate mill feeding a third-party-supplied sizing block for the production of bars, a rod outlet and also a bar-in-coil outlet).

With a capacity to roll 160 tonnes per hr, the small bar and wire rod line will have the highest production rate for a combination mill; it has been designed for low-temperature rolling, as this improves the metallurgical structure and mechanical properties of end products and enhances flexibility during the rolling operation.

Hyundai Steel, situated in Incheon and Seoul (South Korea), belongs to the Hyundai-Kia Automotive Group; it runs six production facilities in South Korea and a further one in China.

The new plant at the Dangjin site will produce special steels for the automotive industry.
