Exchangeable-tip drill grades exend tool life

Exchangeable-tip drill grades exend tool lifeCutting-tool and tooling-system specialist Sandvik Coromant (www.sandvik.coromant.com) has introduced three new grades for its CoroDrill 870 exchangeable-tip drill. GC4344, GC3334 and GC2334 have been developed to offer significant improvements in tool life and “more predictable wear patterns”, while maintaining high feed rates and productivity.

These three new grades feature Zertivo, a PVD (physical vapour deposition) coating technology designed by Sandvik Coromant to enhance the grades’ already proven benefits, while offering significant improvements when it comes to properties such as edge line security, resistance to chipping and overall wear-resistance.

Johan Ekbäck, global product manager at Sandvik Coromant, says: “Drilling is often carried out late in the manufacturing process, with previous operations already having enhanced the initial component’s value.

“Although it seems simple, drilling is a complex operation that can have significant consequences if the tool malfunctions or is run beyond its capacity.

"That is why, when it comes to wear, our customers want to keep their results predictable and consistent.

"With the release of the new CoroDrill 870 grades, our ambition has been to give customers increased tool life and reliability in their drilling operations.”

Available in various geometries, the latest grades cover applications in most ISO materials, although they are optimised for ISO P (steel), ISO M (stainless steel) and ISO K (cast iron). Designed for the intermediate hole-tolerance area of H9–H10, the CoroDrill 870 exchangeable-tip drills can be tailored to undertake a variety of
applications through a selection of diameter, length, step or chamfer possibilities. They are available in diameters from 10 to 33mm and depth capacities from 3xD to 123xD.
