AFRC and Hexagon join forcesThe University of Strathclyde’s Advanced Forming Research Centre (AFRC) has agreed a Tier One partnership with Telford-based Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence, which will provide ‘state of the art’ metrology equipment — including its Romer Absolute measuring arm that AFRC’s engineers can take out on the road to the benefit of manufacturing facilities around Scotland (www.hexagonmi.com).

Providing precision measurement of full-scale assemblies, Hexagon’s equipment will enable AFRC engineers to address metrology challenges and validate existing measurement systems.

At the same time, they explore new opportunities for wider industry by engaging with businesses of all sizes.

Along with gaining access to the AFRC’s core research programme, Hexagon will engage with the centre’s vast network of world-leading manufacturing and technology companies; its cutting-edge technology is currently being used in a number of AFRC projects that are nearing the industrialisation phase, placing Hexagon firmly at the forefront of new manufacturing developments.

Danny McMahon, senior manufacturing engineer and metrology team lead at the AFRC, said: “Access to Hexagon’s technology marks an evolution in our ability to help manufacturers in their own factories.

“It can really benefit a production facility in sectors including automotive, aviation and shipbuilding, checking for defects or measuring and inspecting large parts.

“This equipment is a large investment for small and medium-size companies, so we are sharing resources and making it accessible to all Scottish firms.

“We are also looking to integrate metrology with robotics, creating a highly accurate machine that has very efficient measurement capabilities.”
