Leicester-based Miles Platts, a designer and manufacturer of precision technical mouldings, has invested in an automated solution — a Starrett AVR300 CNC vision system supplied by Optimax IIM Ltd (
www.optimaxonline.com) — to guarantee that it meets the highest level of quality assurance.
Quality manager Jonathan Fraser said: “The AVR300 is transformative, optimising processes and cutting down inspection cycle times.
The powerful 3-D measuring software allows me to pre-program the automated measurement of specific parts, allowing measurements to be made by shopfloor staff without the need for training.”
He added that the AVR300 is ideal for automotive projects, not only for initial sample inspection reports but throughout the production part approval process.
Black, white and clear plastics mouldings can be very challenging to inspect and measure optically, but the Starrett system’s precision lens and advanced lighting options create a high contrast on surface, edge and blind-hole features, while its accuracy provides the capability to measure optical height and depth down to a few µm.
Furthermore, with Optimax’s UKAS-accredited service and calibration support, Mr Fraser is confident that the AVR300 will continue to optimise the full supply chain process without over-burdening the quality control department.
The UKAS accredited calibration ensures accuracy by providing a true understanding of the measurement uncertainty.
