Large-capacity German-built machining centres Since the German machine tool manufacturer Waldrich Coburg introduced its first series-produced (as opposed to bespoke-manufactured) machining centre in two sizes nearly four years ago, 30 of its Taurus machines have been sold internationally.

These were described as ‘small portal-type machining centres’, but with axis travels of 5,000 x 3,500 x 1,500mm and 6,000 x 4,000 x 1,500mm — plus a 2,000mm W axis — they are large by most standards.

Now the manufacturer — represented in the UK, Ireland and Middle East by Gosport-based Kingsbury (www.kingsburyuk.com) — has announced that it will be adding a new model to the range this year.

The Taurus 30 Gemini, an alternative version of the larger of the two existing machines, will combine the high level of structural stability for which Waldrich Coburg is renowned with higher-speed machining to accommodate the needs of users looking for high levels of productivity, along with good surface finish and high levels of accuracy.

The machine is also designed to undertake die and mould production, offering roughing operations with a 63kW/1,500Nm capability, and high-speed finishing at up to 20,000rev/min.

A notable feature of the machine’s design is vibration-damping wear-free hydrostatic guideways for all axes.
