Volunteers invited for Formula Student eventThe Institution of Mechanical Engineers, which runs the Formula Student event, is inviting volunteers to help “drive and deliver Europe’s most established and popular educational motor-sport competition”.

Applications are now open (www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/WFCMJ7R).

Successful applicants will be contacted via e-mail and sent further instructions.

The IMechE says there are various roles available and that each requires different skills and experience.

They include: business presentation judging; design judging; scrutineering; dynamic testing; paddock tours; evaluating costs and sustainability; impact attenuator testing; information point; and electric-vehicle scrutineering.

Oxford Brookes Racing (OBR) is once again entering the Formula Student competition, but this year it will be entering a fully electric racing car.

Rebekah Potter, the PR and communication manager for the team of students from Oxford Brookes university, said: “OBR20 will be our first electric entry in Class 1, so a big change for us from our combustion era.”

The car consists of a carbon monocoque, with an all-wheel drive and a motor delivering 172bhp (limited to 107 at all competitions), plus in-hub planetary gearboxes (designed in-house), bespoke carbon-fibre rims and 3-D printed titanium uprights.
