The challenge of inspecting large workpieces

The challenge of inspecting large workpiecesThe modernisation of vehicles has brought new challenges for automotive manufacturers, with the shift from hydraulic to electric power assistance requiring specialised inspection equipment.

Kent-based Re-Go Autoparts, a remanufacturer of steering components, recently invested in Vision Engineering’s Evo Cam with articulated-arm mount — a complete solution for high-precision electrical rework and circuit board inspection.

Re-Go Autoparts is committed to delivering the highest-quality re-engineered steering components at its Tonbridge facility, with a service life equal to that which the part had before it needed to be overhauled.

Its requirement for a high-magnification view of electrical components posed a significant inspection challenge, as these small parts are mounted on heavy and awkward workpieces.

Having previously received a complete measurement solution from Leicestershire-based Optimax Imaging Inspection & Measurement Ltd (www.optimax online.com), Re-Go was confident that the Evo Cam with articulated-arm mount was the right solution this time around.

Gary Martin, Re-Go’s managing director, said: “The Evo Cam ticked all the boxes. Most competitor equipment is fixed to a stage that would not allow us to fit our workpieces below it.

"With such a complex process you must have a good view of the components, so the flexibility and manoeuvrability of the articulated-arm mount is crucial.

"The Evo Cam’s overlay grids also offer useful reference for scale, which is
ample for this application.”

Mr Martin pointed out that reducing worker fatigue was also a crucial motivation in the purchase of the Evo Cam.

He said: “You have the ability to put your hands under the camera, so you have space to work, use tools or tweezers and carry out soldering. It becomes natural and easy to use in a short time.”
