WEG India, an electric motor manufacturer, has supplied 14 262-tonne electric motors for the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme (KLIS) in India, which has been designed to address water shortages in the region.
Following two years of construction, the huge project was completed in June this year and is the largest contract WEG India has completed for the water sector.
The project, which commenced in 2018, not only reinforces the storage of water available for irrigation in the region — 8,000km
2 of land across 13 districts of the state of Telangana — but has also increased groundwater levels in the Godavari River Basin.
To complete the project, WEG supplied 14 40MW 30-pole motors to Xylem India, one of the world’s largest hydraulic pump manufacturers, which then coupled the motors to its high-capacity pumps. The electric motors are the largest ever manufactured in the WEG India factory.
João Paulo Gualberto da Silva, managing director of the WEG Energy business unit, said: “Supplying equipment to the world’s largest pumping project is a great reference for WEG, both from a technological and commercial point of view.
“For this project, we built the largest electric motor ever manufactured by WEG India, an ambitious engineering project that will certainly open up many other global opportunities in the water and sanitation market.”
WEG has been manufacturing locally in India since 2011, employing 800 people at its facilities located in Hosur-Tamil Nadu, 40km south of Bangalore-Karnataka. WEG is a global manufacturer of electrical and mechanical equipment for industrial sectors across all continents.
It has manufacturing units in 12 countries, is present in more than 135 countries and has more than 31,000 staff world-wide.
