ETG boxes clever with new double column machinesThe Wellesbourne-based Engineering Technology Group (ETG) recently introduced the new Vulcan Series of large-bed double-column machining centres for the machining of large complex components up to 10m long. The machines are offered as a ‘boxway or linear configuration’.

The new boxway series is available with variants that includes the DC Series 16/20B and the 23/26B, which both offer several dimensional alternatives. The smallest machine in the 16/20B series is the DC2216/20B; the largest is the 30-tonne DC4216/20B, which has an X axis of 4.2m, a Z axis of 800mm to 1m and a Y axis of 1.6m to 2m — depending upon the variant selected.

This machine offers a positional accuracy of ±0.005mm over 300mm of travel and an overall positional accuracy over the complete travel of the machine of ±0.015mm.

The DC4216/20B has a 4m x¥ 1.4m or 1.7m table with a maximum table load of 12,000kg. The spindle motor is available with a range of options that include: powers of 18.5, 22, 26, 30 or 37kW; speeds ranging from 6,000 to 20,000rev/min, depending upon the variant selected; and a choice of BT50, ISO50 or CAT50 spindle taper.

The tooling carousel can be specified with 24, 32, 40 or 60 tool positions, and the automatic tool change system can accommodate tools up to 350mm long, 125mm in diameter (245mm if the adjacent position is free) and weighing a maximum of 20kg.
