Tata Technologies, a global product engineering and digital services company, has announced its plans to scale-up its West Midlands operations that will see the creation of around 350 jobs in the region. This step follows consistent investments being made by Tata Technologies to leverage the talent pool available in this part of the world to engineer to competitive products through its ‘state of the art’ European headquarters — the European Innovation and Development Centre (EIDC).

The announcement marks a commitment from Tata Technologies’ to develop and leverage the next generation of digital capability and talent in the West Midlands through strategic collaboration with the University of Wolverhampton and the University of Warwick to establish centres of excellence for Cybersecurity, FUSA (Functional Safety for Automotive) and AUTOSAR (Automotive Open System Architecture).

Located in Leamington Spa (Tachbrook Park), Tata Technologies’ EIDC serves Europe, the USA and Asia-Pacific markets, delivering engineering and digital solutions across the automotive, aerospace and industrial machinery sectors. It houses engineering support services, two advanced engineering laboratories and a research and design centre.

The announcement coincides with West Midlands mayor Andy Street’s visit to the site, where discussions centred on Tata Technologies’ pledge to develop a diverse and inclusive workforce in the region, supported by its initiative — ‘Rainbow’, driven across the organisation. The visit featured a display of the latest technologies in electric and autonomous vehicles being engineered in the West Midlands, which are expected to shape the future of the automotive industry.

Global mindset

Warren Harris, managing director and CEO of Tata Technologies, said: “Tata Technologies’ EIDC is a key delivery centre for Tata Technologies Europe and is the biggest centre out of India with approximately 650 employees in the UK. Teams at EIDC are part of some of the largest innovations that we are delivering for our global customers through a global mindset and we want to leverage the talent at West Midlands to engineer the next generation of electric vehicles and aircraft.

“Through partnerships with educational institutions, we aim to provide training, resources and job opportunities to individuals looking to enter or advance in these fields while also fostering innovation and growth in the mobility industry. We are delighted to host the West Midlands mayor to discuss our shared ambitions in developing an expert and diverse workforce in the West Midlands.”

Mr Street said: “Tata is a globally renowned company and an important employer in our region. Back in November, I had the chance to meet with senior Tata leadership in Mumbai so it is great to see Tata Technologies recognising the strength of our local — and STEM-literate — talent pool with this announcement regarding investment and expansion.”

Neil Rami, chief executive of the West Midlands Growth Company, said: “Tata Technologies operate at the forefront of the industry, innovative digital solutions that are driving the fourth industrial revolution, globally. The continued growth of the firm’s European headquarters is a testament to the world-leading, diverse, STEM-proficient talent pool produced by our universities, which is only set to strengthen following Tata Technologies’ landmark announcement.

“We are steadfast in building the firm’s presence in the West Midlands, reinforcing our position as the global nexus of industry 4.0. We look forward to our continued partnership with Tata Technologies and demonstrating our shared values.”

The investment follows a trade mission to India organised by the Investment Promotion Agency, the West Midlands Growth Company (WMGC), where strategic discussions with senior Tata Group officials included Natarajan Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons, and focused on the important role of the West Midlands in the group’s UK growth plans.
