Shaft couplings from norelem solve engineering challenges

Shaft couplings from norelem solve engineering challengesFrom precise torque transmission, vibration damping and motion control, couplings supplied by Birmingham-based norelem can be used in various applications and are readily available in different designs. The full range includes metal bellows couplings, elastomer dog couplings, beam couplings, Oldham-type couplings and rigid couplings.

Shaft couplings connect two shafts and transmit rotary movements and torques from a driving shaft to a driven shaft. The shafts are coupled via a rigid or a flexible connection. Mostly, linear shaft connections are realised with flexible shaft couplings which are also used to compensate for axial and radial shaft misalignments and angular errors as well as to dampen vibrations and shocks.

norelem CEO Marcus Schneck said: “Our shaft couplings are used in a wide variety of applications and designs; from simple drives in machine tools, packaging, and textile machines to complex positioning drives in control and regulation technology.”

Applications for shaft couplings are divided into two functional areas. Firstly, there are applications in which the transmission of torque and power is the main focus, such as in pumps, conveyor systems and agitators. Secondly, there are applications for position and motion control, which are to transmit rotary movements precisely and with positional accuracy, for example, in servo and stepper motors for linear axes.

norelem offers shaft couplings as metal bellows couplings and elastomer dog couplings as well as beam couplings, Oldham-type couplings and rigid couplings. The choice of design depends primarily on the power to be transmitted and the connection to be balanced. The type of mounting is also an important factor and therefore there are versions with clamping hubs and removable clamping hubs, which are slotted and split in the case of rigid couplings. Couplings with removable, split clamping hubs can be mounted radially. Shaft and drive do not have to be dismantled for installation or replacement of the coupling.

Almost maintenance-free

A massive benefit to any operation, norlem’s dshaft couplings are almost maintenance-free. Only in the case of elastomer dog couplings are the coupling stars, which are made of polyurethane, subject to wear due to ageing and load. However, the stars can be easily replaced without having to replace the entire coupling.

Meanwhile, metal bellows couplings are made of stainless steel and aluminium, with the metal bellows made of stainless steel and the hub made of aluminium and stainless steel. The couplings are mounted with clamping hubs or removable clamping hubs and are available for shaft dia from 3 to 70mm, while transmitting torques from 0.5 to 1500Nm.

Constructed of aluminium and stainless steel with the coupling star being made of polyurethane, elastomer dog couplings can be assembled with the use of clamping hubs or removable clamping hubs. They are available for shaft dia from 3 to 60mm and can transmit torques from 0.7 to 525Nm.

Beam couplings are made of aluminium and stainless steel. They are mounted via clamping hubs or removable clamping hubs. The spring bar couplings are designed for shaft dia of 3 to 35mm and torques of 3 to 130Nm. Transmitting torques of 1 to 7Nm, Oldham-type couplings are made of aluminium and can be mounted on shaft dia from 3 to 14 mm via clamping hubs. Finally, rigid couplings are made of steel and stainless steel and the mounting method is slotted and split. Torques of 16 to 2250Nm can be transmitted with a shaft dia of 8 to 85mm.
