Starrag UK and SMT team up for large-capacity turning and RAM boringLarge-capacity SMT lathe

Starrag customers throughout the UK and Eire can now access an unrivalled range of cost-effective, large-capacity horizontal turning machines and RAM borers, following Starrag UK’s exclusive agreement with SMT of the Czech Republic.

The deal means Starrag’s UK customers have an unrivalled single-source of ‘complete machining’ expertise in the most cost-effective and efficient machining of large, heavy parts via the company’s dedicated large parts machining systems (LPMS) solutions division.

SMT’s SR 1-5 series of universal/multi-tasking/multi-functional horizontal lathes that also incorporate milling and BTA drilling, if required, offer turning between centres of up to 30,000 x 6,000mm diameter. Swings over the bed extend from 1,250 to 6,000mm, distances between centres are 3 to 30m and cross slide travels are from 700 to 2,500mm. The five-machine range is rated at 55 to 355kW.

Starrag UK is also offering the SMT range of SVA travelling column and SV fixed column RAM borers for oversize workpieces weighing up to 320 tonnes. The machines can be supplied in various table configurations and with a choice of RAM options, and have travels that extend to 11,000 x 6,000mm. SVA machines (four models) have X, Y and Z axes travels of 6,000–11,000mm, 4,000–8,000mm and 2,000–3,200mm, respectively, RAM capacities of 2,000 to 5,000mm and W axes (crossrail) of 2,000–5,000mm.

Global success

Similar RAM and crossrail capacities are available with the SV range (also four models) which have Y and Z axes travels of 4,000–8,000mm and 2,000–3,200mm, respectively. Both SVA and SV series are available with torques that extend from 40 to 80kN. Also, different headstock variants are available — for turning and for turning and milling.

All SMT machines have enjoyed global success (in more than 40 countries) since the company was established in 1911, for users in industry sectors that include energy, oil and gas, transport, mining and shipping — including one leading UK specialist supplier to industries such as nuclear, defence, aerospace and marine which is using a SMT lathe that accommodates workpieces of 10 x 4 x 3m and weighing up to 40,000kg.

In all cases, these machines are built using recognised world-class construction principles based around the use of cast iron components for ultimate levels of rigidity and dampening — as is the case with all Starrag product ranges. Stable machine elements result in machining to highly-accurate standards — even to microns on the heaviest workpieces in materials including stainless steel and titanium.

Starrag’s LPMS division combines long-established machine ranges with years of system integration and applications engineering experience, resulting in seamless manufacturing solutions using ‘best-in-class’ machines complemented by first-rate software, tooling, workholding/
handling and application and engineering skills for the accurate production of large-capacity components in all material types.

In addition, as an increasing number of customers seek single set-up and/or multi-tasking cell machining routines, Starrag draws on its renowned skills for integrating technologies such as milling, turning, boring and drilling, starting with a single machine operation or multi-machine systems.

Starrag’s LPMS division also has these machine ranges at its heart: Berthiez — vertical grinding and turning, also milling, using single- and double-column machines. Grinding diameters extend to 6,000mm and table capacities are available for workpieces weighing up to 20 tonnes — with table/pallet changing solutions and robotic head changers.

Dörries — vertical turning, milling and grinding on single- and double-column machines. Single-column machines have swing diameters up to 2,800mm and table capacities of up to 25 tonnes; double-column models can accommodate loads of 350 tonnes and have swing diameters of up to 12,000mm.

Droop+Rein — milling and turning using fixed portal/moving table and overhead gantry type machines. Portal machines have tables up to 30,000mm long and main motors up to 150kW; overhead gantry models’ spindles are rated up to 100kW and tables can be built in different configurations including rotary and turning options.

Lee Scott, Starrag UK’s director for sales and applications, said: “Our exclusive agreement with SMT means our LPMS division’s capability has been enhanced in response to an increase in our business surrounding large parts machining across all industry sectors, especially energy and power generation.

“The result is that Starrag’s UK and Eire customers have access to a dedicated single-source of excellence that can meet large component machining needs in the most effective and efficient manner. This applies not only to the supply of machines but also for long-term OEM (original equipment manufacturer) service support, applications engineering and turnkey solutions.”
