Invinity ‘transforming grid-scale energy storage’

Invinity ‘transforming grid-scale energy storage’Endurium, a ‘next-generation modular vanadium flow battery’ from London-based Invinity Energy Systems, is said to integrate all of the benefits of the company’s VS3 product platform (as used by customers throughout the world) into a design optimised for use in long-duration high-throughput large-scale energy storage projects.

Invinity says Endurium has been engineered to scale from 10MWh to 1GWh with charge/discharge durations of between 4 and 18hr with “no cycle limits and proven sub-second response times. Our proven VS3 platform will continue to be available for systems under 10MWh.

“We are introducing Endurium at a pivotal moment for the global energy sector. At the recent COP29 Summit, delegates ratified the ‘Global Green Energy Storage Pledge’, which aims to increase global energy storage capacity sixfold from 2022 levels. This target means the world will need 1,500GW of storage connected by 2030 if it is to meet the emissions-reduction goals set at COP28.

“Achieving this goal will require adding over 158GW of energy storage annually through 2030; Endurium is perfectly suited to meet the scale of projects required to achieve this growth and the needs of a number of the most exciting energy storage build-out initiatives, including the UK’s LDES Cap & Floor Scheme, LDES (long duration electricity storage) deployment targets in states like California and New York, and Ontario’s planned LDES procurement, as well as meeting New South Wales’ long duration definition within the context of the 28GWh target announced recently.”

Invinity added that Endurium has been designed with end-of-life recyclability in mind. “Not only is the electrolyte itself fully recoverable and perpetually reusable, but we estimate that 99% of the remainder of the system — mostly metals, plastics, and electronics — can be widely and easily recycled. We also know that domestic content, local support, and transparent supply chains are of paramount importance, which is why Endurium is manufactured at and supported by our facilities in the UK and North America.”
