Portugal orders Embraer A-29N Super Tucano aircraftThe Portuguese Ministry of National Defence recently signed a contract with Embraer — the global aerospace company headquartered in Brazil — to acquire 12 A-29N Super Tucanos that will equip the Portuguese Air Force, making it the launch customer of the new variant of this advanced trainer and light attack aircraft, which incorporates advanced avionics, NATO-specific communications systems, and other non-disclosed new capabilities tailored to meet Portugal’s operational requirements.

Bosco da Costa Junior, Embraer Defence and Security’s president and CEO, said: “We would like to thank the Portuguese Ministry of National Defence and Air Force for the trust they place in Embraer solutions. This contract gives us the opportunity to contribute to the modernisation of the Portuguese Air Force and to further deepen our strong partnership, paving the way for additional industrial cooperation with the local defence industry.

“The A-29 Super Tucano is the global leader in its category, with over 260 orders, surpassing 570,000 flight hours, with 60,000 of those in combat. The number of air forces using the A-29 Super Tucano is steadily expanding due to its combination of capabilities and operational flexibility. The aircraft is suitable for a wide range of missions, including advanced pilot training, close air support, air interdiction, JTAC training, border surveillance, reconnaissance, and air escort.”

Meanwhile, Luxair — the flag carrier of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg — has signed a firm order with Embraer for two E195-E2; a small narrowbody aircraft, it will complement the larger narrowbody aircraft the airline already has on order. In exercising the two options secured in the 2023 firm order for four E195-E2 aircraft, Luxair now has a total of six E195-E2s on order. Three purchase rights remain, with conversion rights to E190-E2 as required. Luxair’s first aircraft delivery, from the 2023 order, is scheduled to fly in early 2026. Luxair’s new order secures additional delivery slots in 2027.
