Naming ceremony for new shipsCammell Laird, the Merseyside ship-building and engineering group, recently held a naming ceremony for two new ships.
The vessels, made for Scotland’s Western Ferries, are the first built at Cammell Laird since the submarine HMS Unicorn was launched in 1992 (it was commissioned by the Royal Navy in 1993).

The ceremony in Birkenhead saw the ferries named Sound of Seil and Sound of Soay. They can carry up to 54 cars and are enlarged versions of Western Ferries’ Sound of Shuna vessel, which can carry 45 cars. They are due to begin operations on the route between Dunoon and Gourock in the near future.

Cammell Laird managing director Linton Roberts said: “Our employees worked hard to ensure that these vessels provide the best possible passenger experience and support the growth of Western Ferries.”
