Wolverhampton Electro Plating Ltd (WEP) has partnered with a major automotive fastener manufacturer to test PFAS-free coating systems on behalf of leading OEMs. Part of the Anochrome Group, metal finishing specialist WEP is leveraging its expertise and ‘state of the art’ testing equipment to examine the performance of PFAS-free finishes on a variety of parts.
Automotive OEMs are actively working towards phasing out coatings that contain Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) due to their persistence in the environment and potential health risks. Denis Rainbird, WEP’s general manager, said: “We have been engaged in testing PFAS-free zinc flake coating alternatives for Tier One customers over the last six months. Utilising the on-site cyclic corrosion system at our sister company Anochrome Ltd, WEP’s salt spray chamber and coefficient of friction testing equipment, we have accurately assessed how each part performs with various coatings.
“In collaboration with lead fastener engineers, we are working to demonstrate that these coatings offer performance and protection equal to, or greater, than PFAS-containing finishes. This partnership further showcases our team’s technical expertise and the capabilities of the Group’s industry-leading testing facilities.”
PFAS-free zinc flake coatings from GEOMET NOF, Magni and Dorken are all being examined, as well as electroplated PFAS-free topcoats from Macdermid. The trials — being led by WEP colleagues Paul Walker-Shelton (technical sales), Richard Chater (HSE and technical support manager), and Andy Ball (APQP Engineer), as well as Anochrome technical manager Rob Tennant — are ongoing.
PFAS can contaminate soil and water, causing long-term ecological harm. Eliminating them supports safer manufacturing, aligns with evolving regulations and encourages more sustainable, environmentally responsible practices.
