New inverter production line for EVs at Astemo UK

New inverter production line for EVs at Astemo UKAstemo UK Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Astemo Ltd, will build a new production line for inverters for next-generation electric vehicles (EVs) at its Bolton plant. This initiative, which aims to strengthen Astemo UK’s electrification business, has been approved by the UK Government’s Automotive Transformation Fund (ATF), and production is scheduled to begin in April 2027. Through the support of the ATF, Astemo UK will build a supply chain for electrification products in the European region.

The ATF is led by the Department for Business and Trade in partnership with the www.apcuk.co.uk Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC). Under the Government’s new DRIVE35 programme, the ATF will continue to unlock private investment in strategic zero-emission vehicle technologies.

Expected to create and secure employment for an estimated 220 people, this investment in the new inverter production line aims to ensure a stable supply of electrification products for the UK and European Union (EU) markets — the total programme investment will be over £100 million.

Next-generation invertors

Designed with electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) in mind and compliant with strict EU standards, the next-generation inverters will be highly efficient, compact, and lightweight. In addition, through establishing local production systems the product will comply with the green procurement policies of major automobile manufacturers, which can contribute to the reduction of Scope 3 emissions throughout the supply chain by avoiding the transporting of products from other regions. This will enable Astemo UK to further capture market share, by supplying products that meet European needs.

Through this investment, Astemo and Astemo UK will contribute to the decarbonisation of the UK and Europe, realising a sustainable mobility society, while accelerating the strengthened global supply of electrification products.

Astemo senior executive vice president Toru Kamioke said: “We are honoured by the UK Government’s support, which reflects the high regard it has for our electrification technology. This investment in our Bolton plant will mark the fourth country in which Astemo manufactures electrification products, alingside Japan, the USA and China. It is an important achievement in our global electrification supply chain. Through the supply of products from the Bolton plant, we will respond to Europe’s EV market growth, while contributing to job creation and the development of the UK automotive industry.”
