One year after its launch,
Rivian and
Volkswagen Group Technologies (RV Tech) have reported strong progress in developing zonal architecture for software-defined vehicles (SDVs). As a result, preparations are now underway for winter testing in Q1 2026 using reference vehicles from VW, Scout, and Audi.
Founded in November 2024, the joint venture is creating modular electronic architecture and functional software that enable central computers to control all vehicle functions. Customers will benefit from automated driving features and infotainment systems updated over the air, eliminating service visits. VW plans to integrate the SDV architecture into electric models built on the SSP platform, targeting up to 30 million units across multiple segments and markets. Rivian will apply the technology to future models R2, R3, and R3X while updating its current fleet.
Oliver Blume, CEO of Volkswagen Group, said: “Our joint venture with Rivian demonstrates how we envision and deliver progress — with speed, precision, and a strong customer focus. In just 12 months, we have created a technological foundation that will enable a new digital driving experience at accessible prices.”
RJ Scaringe, Rivian founder and CEO, said: “RV Tech has gone from strength to strength over the last 12 months and is raising the bar in automotive technology. We are incredibly excited about the launch of R2 next year, which will showcase the advancements the JV has made.”
Winter testing will validate SDV performance under harsh conditions. Hardware specifications for reference vehicles were finalised in spring 2025, and engineering prototypes have been in development since summer at RV Tech sites in Palo Alto and Irvine.
The Volkswagen ID.EVERY1, scheduled for launch in 2027, will be the first Group vehicle featuring SDV architecture in the entry-level electric segment. Work continues on SSP-based models expected by the end of the decade. RV Tech now employs more than 1,500 specialists across the USA, Canada, Sweden, Serbia, and a new Berlin location, strengthening collaboration with VW brands in Europe.
