Autrix automates warehouse for Wayland GamesRobotics and advanced management technology have helped one of Europe’s largest independent tabletop hobby retailers transform its warehouse operations to meet surging demand. Autrix, a specialist in warehouse automation and software, has installed its flagship Automation Control System (ACS) at Wayland Games’ new 50,000ft2 facility in Essex, alongside an autonomous mobile robot (AMR) goods-to-person solution.

The combination of robotics and intelligent management systems have streamlined distribution and packaging, enabling the retailer to scale its business while maintaining service quality. Wayland Games has re-engineered its operations to process more orders, create new jobs and deliver faster despatch times.

Richard Lawford, managing director and founder of Wayland Games, said: “Phase one has delivered exactly the business impact we needed for our expansion. We are processing significantly more orders with the same size team, and our customers are seeing faster despatch times during peak periods. What sets Autrix apart is its genuine partnership approach. The company didn't just install equipment and leave — it has worked alongside us to optimise operations and ensure we are getting maximum value from the investment. The success we have achieved gives us complete confidence to move forward with the next phase and continue building our automation capabilities together.”

Boosting efficiency

The first phase of Autrix’s project tackled a common challenge for specialist retailers by deploying autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) to bring products to dedicated stations, eliminating the need for staff to walk long distances across the warehouse. This approach has boosted efficiency and accuracy while reducing physical strain on employees. Phase two will introduce fully automated packing technology to further modernise Wayland Games’ fulfilment process and support its growth trajectory.

Joseph Daft, a director at Autrix, said: “Seeing the immediate impact of phase one validates everything we believe about making intelligent automation accessible to growing businesses. Wayland Games represents the best of British speciality retail and they are a real success story, having thrived as an independent retailer for 15 years. But companies like this need to modernise if they are to stay ahead and achieve further success. Wayland Games has built something remarkable in the tabletop gaming community – our job is to ensure its operational capabilities can scale with its ambitions. The success of phase one and its commitment to phase two demonstrates how the right technology partnership can drive sustainable growth.”

Sustainability was also a key focus, with phase one incorporating energy-efficient lighting, solar panels and ACS technology to reduce waste and optimise resource use. Following the successful completion of the first phase at the new Brentwood facility, the second phase has already started.
