New UK battery gigafactory launches in Sunderland

New UK battery gigafactory launches in SunderlandProduction is now officially underway at AESC’s new 15.8GW/hr plant in Sunderland that will manufacture lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles (EVs) made in the UK, and also support the launch of the new Nissan Leaf. It is the culmination of over a decade’s experience building British-made EV batteries for the UK car industry.

At the heart of AESC’s operation will be the largest clean room in the UK, where the company’s cutting-edge battery cells are manufactured to the highest quality standards. Conditions in the clean room are equivalent standard to a hospital operating room. Its workforce will rise to around 1,000 once the plant is fully operational — a four-fold increase since AESC established its current operation at the Sunderland site in 2019, with the company investing over a billion pounds in the UK during that time.

Jim Marley, AESC UK plant director, said: “The launch of our new EV battery gigafactory represents a significant leap in battery technology. It will power the new Nissan Leaf and take the electrification of the British car industry to a new level. Our original gigafactory was the first in Europe and Plant 2 will anchor a resilient, globally competitive EV supply chain for the UK.”

Earlier this year AESC helped launch the National Battery Academy at New College Durham and Newcastle University that will help drive up skills and train the new EV battery manufacturing workforce in the region.

With it headquarters in Yokohama and a robust global footprint — including facilities in the USA, UK, Europe, China, and Japan — AESC has built a nearly two-decade legacy of delivering high-performance batteries for EVs and energy storage systems.

Its advanced technologies power over one million EVs and support energy-storage solutions in more than 60 countries. As the trusted partner for leading automotive manufacturers and energy providers across North America, Europe, and Asia, AESC continues to shape a cleaner, more connected future through innovation, reliability, and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.
