PSL Datatrack and AvISO boost Jota Engineering

Sub-contractor embeds a data-driven culture and streamlines its operations

PSL Datatrack and AvISO boost Jota EngineeringFrom modest beginnings with just four CNC machines and a collection of spreadsheets, Jota Advanced Engineering Ltd has evolved into a high‑performing precision engineering company operating 17 CNC machines and pursuing further expansion. Central to this journey has been the adoption of PSL Datatrack’s modular production control system, combined with AvISO Consultancy’s long‑term guidance on ISO 9001 implementation and ongoing compliance. Together, these partnerships have helped Jota streamline its operations, embed a data‑driven culture and maintain the agility and precision associated with its motorsport roots.

Ryan Goodger, Jota Advanced Engineering’s managing director, said: “We were new to the sector, but we approached every project with the same rigour as our race team — fast turnround, attention to detail and uncompromising quality. That ethos has carried through to every part of our growth.”

He explained that the shift from spreadsheets and manual administration to an integrated production management system was essential as the company scaled, with increasing demand exposing the limitations of paper‑based processes, duplicated data and restricted visibility across operations.

Jota adopted PSL Datatrack in 2016 following a meeting at MACH and an on‑site demonstration. Geoff Gartland, managing director of PSL Datatrack, recalled: “They were doing a great job, but there was only so far they could go with manual systems. PSL Datatrack gave them real‑time control over every aspect of production — from quoting and works order management to CNC shop scheduling and shopfloor data collection. That is when chapter two of Jota’s growth really began.”

JotaThe modular nature of the system allowed Jota to begin with core functions such as quoting, job tracking and inventory control, before adding further capability as the business matured. Customised reporting delivered clearer management visibility, while the introduction of Status Boards — large, live displays inspired by airport departure screens — ensured that work in progress became visible across the entire shopfloor.

Mr Goodger continued: “Status Boards bring your data to life. Everyone knows what is expected and it turns production into a team activity, rather than leaving information in one person’s head or buried in spreadsheets.” Mr Gartland added: “Status Boards foster accountability across the team — they can see why they are doing something and how it contributes to the business.”

Strengthened continuous improvement initiatives

Shop Floor Data Capture has enabled Jota to monitor cycle times, quantities, scrap and corrective actions in real time. Mr Gartland continued: “If something is printed, it is already out of date. Live data gives you the insight to make real‑time decisions and improve efficiency. If you cannot measure and improve something, why are you doing it?” This data‑driven approach has strengthened continuous improvement initiatives, supporting everything from manufacturing process optimisation to more accurate capacity planning.

Alongside operational developments, Jota recognised early that ISO 9001 certification would be essential to sustainable growth. AvISO Consultancy has supported the company since 2016, initially guiding the transition to ISO 9001:2015 and later helping maintain and refine the management system. Working closely with Jota’s senior team, AvISO ensured the standard became a practical business tool rather than an administrative burden. Regular reviews, internal audits and structured improvement workshops have ensured that quality and efficiency have advanced in step with the company’s expansion.

Paul Stevens, managing director of AvISO Consultancy, explained: “ISO 9001 helps prove credibility to customers, streamlines tendering and embeds a culture of accountability and traceability. For a growing business like Jota, it is not just about compliance — it is a tool to continually improve processes and make audits a positive, evidence‑based exercise.”

Mr Stevens added that the partnership with PSL Datatrack provides a technical foundation for this improvement culture: “The system provides the evidence you need to show that you are doing what you say you are doing. PSL Datatrack feeds into the management system, giving Jota confidence that every project is handled consistently, from arrival to delivery.”

Since implementing these systems and standards, Jota’s expansion has been significant. The business has moved from a 3,000ft2 site to a 15,000ft2 facility, with 17 CNC machines supporting growth into sectors including aerospace while continuing to serve motorsport and automotive customers.

Mr Goodger highlighted the operational impact: “The Quotations module allows for fast and accurate estimates, while works order management and the Sequential Scheduler optimise capacity and workflow. Integrated document management ensures that every procedure and drawing is accessible, and Shop Floor Data Capture gives us instant insight into performance.”

Identify what is performing well

External credibility has also strengthened. Mr Stevens noted: “For companies like Jota, ISO 9001 certification shows credibility to the marketplace. Customers can see that processes are monitored and managed effectively. Combining PSL Datatrack with a robust quality management system ensures that evidence is live, accurate and actionable.”

Mr Goodger described the effect of this integration: “PSL Datatrack sits behind everything we do. From quotation to invoice, every step is controlled, recorded and visible. It allows us to identify what is performing well and where improvements can be made, then apply that learning across the business. It is a huge enabler of growth!”

JotaMr Gartland reflected on the collaboration: “There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a customer flourish. Jota’s journey proves that embracing change, investing in systems and building a data‑driven culture works. Their success shows what is possible when ambition is combined with the right software tools and partners.”

Looking ahead, Jota is positioned for another major phase of growth. With a modern facility, strengthened infrastructure, expanded technical capability and a deeply embedded quality‑led approach, the company plans to double in size again while maintaining the consistency and precision that underpin its reputation.

Mr Goodger concluded: “Our journey shows what is possible when you combine vision with the right systems. From four machines to 17, with integrated MRP/ERP software, ISO 9001 certification and a team empowered by live data, we can focus on delivering the best quality for our customers while continuing to grow sustainably.”

Together, PSL Datatrack’s production control software and AvISO Consultancy’s quality management expertise have helped Jota convert good practice into consistent, measurable performance. Jota Advanced Engineering stands as a strong example of how investment in systems and standards can transform a sub-contract manufacturing business into a scalable, sector‑leading operation.
