HMP Featherstone takes the CNC route with CMTSThe workshop at HMP Featherstone, which provides structured engineering activity that supports both vocational training and purposeful work, has strengthened its capabilities by installing a Colchester Storm VL1000 vertical machining centre fitted with an MRT170 trunnion table.

Supplied by Elland-based Colchester Machine Tool Solutions Ltd (CMTS), the addition of industrial-standard CNC equipment gives learners the opportunity to use the same technology found in commercial engineering businesses and gives the workshop a modern CNC capability suited to training and full production.

The Storm VL1000 is part of Colchester’s high-performance vertical machining centre range and is designed for accuracy, consistency and reliable performance over a long service life. Key features include: a high-speed spindle suited to a wide range of tasks and materials; precision linear guideways that support smooth movement and a high level of positional accuracy; a rigid construction that helps maintain accuracy over extended use; and a modern control interface — and with generous travel ranges and capacity for medium-size components it can undertake a diverse range of workshop requirements.

CMTS said the addition of the MRT170 trunnion table expands the VL1000 into a 4+1-axis machining platform: “This configuration allows multi-face machining in a single setup for benefits that include: a reduced need for repeated clamping; improved accuracy through stable positioning; more efficient cycle times; and the opportunity for trainees to work with advanced CNC methods.

“By working with modern CNC equipment, learners at HMP Featherstone gain experience in programming and machine preparation, as well as multi-axis machining. They also learn about component inspection and quality expectations, as well as workflow planning and the safe operation of professional machinery.

“Colchester Machine Tool Solutions has more than 100 years of experience supporting engineering organisations and training environments, and the company continues to provide machines that are recognised throughout the sector.”
