Atlas Copco launches new high-speed vacuum pump

Atlas Copco launches new high-speed vacuum pump Atlas Copco has introduced its new GHS 402–902 VSD⁺ screw pump, a development aimed at delivering high pumping speeds and improved energy efficiency for applications across the food, wood processing and plastics industries.

The launch builds on the company’s ongoing drive to advance vacuum technology. Whereas traditional vacuum systems consumed energy irrespective of demand, modern oil-sealed screw pumps are designed to match performance to process requirements. The new GHS VSD⁺ models continue this approach, using constant pressure setpoint control so that process vacuum is governed by flow demand.

As a second-generation design, the GHS 402–902 VSD⁺ series delivers high pumping speeds from atmospheric pressure through to ultimate vacuum. This enhanced performance translates into faster pump-down times and reduced energy consumption for users, making the range particularly well suited to applications such as food packaging, vacuum cooling of flowers and vegetables, and thermoforming of plastics and white goods.

Atlas Copco has focused closely on both performance and sustainability in the development of the new series. The units incorporate a next-generation oil-injected screw element, paired with a highly efficient IE5 motor and advanced HEX@ connectivity. Together, these features are intended to provide intelligent operation, extended maintenance intervals and reduced operating costs, while lowering overall environmental impact.

Product manager Ilias Alafogiannis explained: “With higher pumping speeds and class leading efficiency across the entire pressure range, the GHS 402–902 VSD⁺ dramatically cuts power usage, directly improving our customers’ bottom line while supporting their sustainability goals.”
The pumps also feature a vertically mounted, fully integrated oil-cooled drivetrain, delivering ergonomic and operational benefits. These include reduced noise levels and a compact footprint of less than 1m², making the systems easier to install and integrate within production environments. An optimised oil-separator vessel further improves oil retention, ensuring cleaner exhaust conditions and contributing to lower environmental impact.

“With a design 30% more compact and oil-discharge levels cut by half compared to previous models, combined with noise-dampening canopy, these pumps are ideal for both central vacuum systems and point of use applications,” explained Ilias Alafogiannis.

Additional features designed to support efficiency include compression optimisation valves within the oil-injected screw element, ensuring high performance from atmospheric pressure with lower power consumption. The units also enable recovery of up to 80% of pump heat as reusable hot water, offering further opportunities for energy savings.

Digitalisation plays an important role in the new range. The HEX@ intelligent controller provides Industry 4.0 functionality, including remote monitoring, diagnostics and advanced control capabilities, allowing operators to optimise performance and minimise downtime.

With its combination of high pumping speed, energy efficiency and compact design, the GHS 402–902 VSD⁺ series reinforces Atlas Copco’s focus on delivering vacuum solutions that meet the evolving demands of modern manufacturing, while supporting sustainability and operational efficiency.
