Eighth Fritz Studer award open for young engineering researchersCNC grinding specialist Studer, has opened entries for the eighth edition of its prestigious Fritz Studer Award, inviting students and recent graduates from European universities and technical colleges to showcase innovative research aimed at advancing the machine tool industry.

The award, established to encourage fresh thinking and technological progress in manufacturing, provides a platform for young researchers to present creative solutions and pioneering developments in precision engineering. The winner, or winners, will receive a prize of CHF 10,000, together with the Fritz Studer Award and a certificate.

Fritz Studer AG is internationally recognised for its expertise in high-precision cylindrical grinding, producing both standard machines and customised system solutions for the machining of small and medium-sized workpieces.

For the 2023 competition, the company is seeking submissions covering a range of topics relevant to the future of machine tool technology. Areas of interest include innovative machine concepts and components for precision machine tools, the use of alternative materials in machine construction, simulation models addressing the dynamic and thermal behaviour of machine tools, and advanced control, sensor and monitoring technologies.

The company is also encouraging entries focused on digital solutions that support the grinding process, as well as new or enhanced manufacturing technologies, particularly those related to precision machining processes such as grinding and hard turning.

The research prize is aimed at graduates who have undertaken scientific or applied research projects as part of their studies, including dissertations, thesis work and other academic research programmes. Applicants are expected to demonstrate substantiated findings or partial results from their work.

According to Studer, the judging process will place particular emphasis on the practical feasibility of the research within the machine industry, alongside the originality of the approach. Scientific quality, the presentation of the work and the accuracy of conclusions will also form part of the assessment criteria.

Entries will be evaluated by a distinguished jury comprising Prof. em. Dr.-Ing. Dr. h.c. Konrad Wegener of inspire-iwf Machine Tools and Manufacturing at ETH Zurich, Fred Gaegauf of the Board of Directors of Fritz Studer AG, and Dr.-Ing. Frank Fiebelkorn, Head of Research and Development at Fritz Studer AG.

The award ceremony is scheduled to take place in mid-February 2027, when the successful entrant or entrants will be recognised for their contribution to innovation in machine tool technology and manufacturing research.
