Hexagon launches new OPTIV optical CMM at IMTS

Hexagon launches new OPTIV optical CMM at IMTS Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence has launched its next-generation OPTIV S optical coordinate measuring machine (CMM). The redesigned platform delivers significant improvements in speed, accuracy and usability while introducing a new generation of AI-assisted measurement technologies that will be released in phases throughout 2026 and 2027.

Designed for manufacturers inspecting complex, high-value components across industries including electronics, medical devices, automotive and precision engineering, OPTIV S combines advanced vision measurement with tactile and multisensor capabilities to help quality teams improve throughput while simplifying inspection workflows.

Manuel Mueller, a director of product marketing at Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence, said: "Manufacturers are under increasing pressure to inspect more parts in less time without compromising accuracy. OPTIV S was developed to help quality teams meet those demands by combining higher-speed measurement, improved precision and intelligent software capabilities that reduce programming effort and make advanced optical metrology easier to deploy."

The new OPTIV S platform has been redesigned to deliver significantly improved measurement performance while increasing inspection productivity. Tactile accuracy has been enhanced to E0, MPEE = (1.6 + L/200) micron, while higher travel speeds and acceleration provide approximately 30% greater machine dynamics.

Initial application testing has also demonstrated inspection cycle times around 15% shorter than previous models. In addition, a larger field-of-view vision sensor enables more features to be measured within a single image, reducing the number of captures required. Together, these improvements allow manufacturers to inspect parts more efficiently while maintaining the precision demanded by challenging production environments.

Alongside its hardware advances, OPTIV S introduces a new generation of intelligent software capabilities within PC-DMIS, designed to simplify optical measurement programming and improve inspection consistency. New features scheduled for rollout through 2027 include AI Edge Detection, which uses AI-assisted camera and lighting calibration to improve edge detection, reduce programming time and deliver more consistent measurements across different machines and part conditions.

Hexagon 1 Fast Auto-Focus will provide up to 50% faster autofocus performance, helping to further reduce inspection times, while AI illumination will automatically optimise lighting parameters to improve edge detection and minimise manual setup and trial-and-error programming. These developments are expected to be released commercially with PC-DMIS 2026.2 and throughout 2027.

By combining advanced hardware with intelligent AI-driven software, OPTIV S reduces reliance on operator expertise while making high-precision optical inspection faster, more consistent and more repeatable across production environments.

Furthermore, OPTIV S strengthens Hexagon's portfolio of optical coordinate measuring machines, positioning itself as a compact, high-accuracy multisensor solution that bridges productivity and precision. The platform supports manufacturers seeking to modernise quality inspection through intelligent automation while maintaining flexibility for a wide variety of measurement applications.

By combining improved mechanical performance with AI-assisted measurement technologies, OPTIV S helps manufacturers reduce inspection bottlenecks, improve repeatability and increase confidence in quality data without adding complexity to existing workflows. Together with MAESTRO, Hexagon's next-generation all-digital CMM platform, OPTIV S expands the company's portfolio of modern inspection solutions, giving manufacturers the flexibility to choose the right measurement technology for each application while benefiting from the latest advances in hardware and intelligent software.

Many of the new capabilities extend to Hexagon’s existing OPTIV M platform as well. The PC-DMIS software and AI-assisted measurement features being introduced with OPTIV S, including Hex.ODS/AI Edge Detection, Fast Auto-Focus and AI Illumination, will also be available on the OPTIV M platform, so existing customers gain comparable programming and inspection-consistency enhancements with upgrades to their systems.

OPTIV S is a direct expression of Hexagon's Group strategy to embed AI and automation across its measurement technology portfolio, reducing dependence on specialist operator expertise and making high-precision inspection accessible to a broader range of manufacturers.

The launch reflects Hexagon's continued investment in connecting the physical and digital worlds, turning inspection data into actionable intelligence that supports faster, more confident decision-making across the industries it serves, from aerospace and automotive to electronics and medical devices.

OPTIV S (starting with size 4.4.3) will be commercially available starting September 14th, 2026, at IMTS and AMB, with additional AI-powered capabilities, expanded sizes and more configurations introduced through 2027.
