Mazak to open innovation hub in 2027 Yamazaki Mazak has announced plans to open a new research and development facility in Japan in August 2027, bringing together its research, engineering and machine tool prototyping activities under one roof in a move designed to accelerate innovation and product development.

The new facility, known as the Mazak Innovation Hub (MIH), will be located at the company's headquarters in Oguchi, Aichi Prefecture. It will serve as a central location for developing next-generation manufacturing technologies and machine tools, while encouraging greater collaboration between employees, researchers and external partners.

According to Mazak, the Innovation Hub has been designed around the concept of connecting people and technology. By consolidating key R&D functions in a single location, the company aims to streamline the process from initial design through to prototyping, testing and eventual production.

A major feature of the new building will be its open-plan office environment, created to encourage communication across departments and disciplines. Flexible workspaces, including informal seating areas, high-counter workstations and strategically located meeting spaces, will be incorporated throughout the facility to promote interaction and the sharing of ideas.

The company believes that creating opportunities for spontaneous discussions between employees from different teams and generations will help stimulate creativity, strengthen engagement and ultimately lead to faster innovation.

The facility has also been designed to bring engineers and machine tools into closer proximity. Office areas will sit alongside machine tool prototyping and evaluation facilities, with large observation windows allowing employees to remain connected to products under development.

Mazak said this arrangement will enable staff from different engineering disciplines to collaborate more closely around physical machines, quickly transforming concepts and ideas into prototypes that can be tested and refined. By improving links between design, prototyping, evaluation and production functions, the company expects to shorten development lead times and respond more rapidly to changing market requirements.

Open innovation is another key objective of the project. The Innovation Hub will include dedicated collaboration spaces where Mazak can work with universities, research organisations, suppliers and other technology partners on joint development initiatives.

These areas will provide a setting for technical exchanges and collaborative projects while helping to develop specialist engineering talent. Meeting rooms will be located close to machine installation areas, enabling detailed technical discussions to take place alongside working equipment.

At the same time, Mazak said appropriate security measures will be incorporated to protect confidential information. Partitions and controlled-access areas will ensure that sensitive development activities can be conducted securely while still supporting collaboration with external organisations.

The company believes that striking a balance between openness and security will strengthen partnerships and help accelerate the creation of new technologies and manufacturing solutions.

The investment also forms part of a broader strategy to attract and develop highly skilled employees. By creating a modern working environment designed to support creativity and collaboration, Mazak hopes to enhance both recruitment and staff development while reinforcing its long-term research and development capabilities.

Announcing the project, the company said the Mazak Innovation Hub will act as a catalyst for future innovation, helping to speed up the development of advanced technologies and competitive products. Through the new centre, Yamazaki Mazak aims to strengthen its contribution to the continued advancement of manufacturing around the world.
