TaeguTec strengthens aluminium turning performance

TaeguTec strengthens aluminium turning performance TaeguTec has expanded its T-Turn turning insert programme with the introduction of the TTA101 grade. This new Ta-C coated insert has been designed to deliver longer tool life, sharper cutting edges, and a superior surface finish in high-performance aluminium and non-ferrous machining applications.

The new TTA101 grade joins TaeguTec's established range of turning inserts featuring the FL chipbreaker for aluminium applications. The FL chipbreaker has proven itself across the T-Turn line, with its high positive rake geometry and sharp cutting edge, both optimised to minimise built-up edge formation during aluminium machining. The introduction of the TTA101 grade now significantly extends that capability, adding a Ta-C coating that addresses the wear and surface finish demands of the most productive aluminium turning environments.

The impressive Ta-C coating technology is distinguished by its exceptional hardness and extremely low coefficient of friction. With a coating thickness of less than 0.5μm, the TTA101 grade preserves the sharp cutting edge geometry of the underlying insert after coating, avoiding the edge rounding that can compromise surface finish and increase cutting forces with thicker coatings. A hardness rating of HV 5000 or higher provides outstanding wear resistance, while superior resistance to high-temperature oxidation ensures the coating maintains its integrity at sustained cutting speeds. The result is smooth, consistent chip evacuation and an excellent surface finish on non-ferrous workpiece materials.

The TTA101 grade is available across a broad programme of insert geometries within the T-Turn line, covering the CCGT, DCGT, TCGT, VCGT, and RCGT designations, with positive 7° clearance across rhombic, triangular, and round insert types. Recommended cutting speeds for the TTA101 grade reach up to 1,500 m/min on wrought aluminium alloys, extending the envelope well beyond what is achievable with uncoated tooling.
