Statkraft Energi AS has selected
Voith to modernise the Sima hydropower plant, a critical asset in Norway’s renewable energy infrastructure. Commissioned in 1980, the country’s second-largest hydropower plant will undergo extensive modernisation of its electrical power and automation systems. The primary goals are to extend the operational lifespan of the station, secure high plant availability for the long term, and reduce the risk of failures and unscheduled downtimes in the future.
To avoid costly downtimes, Voith will carry out the comprehensive modernisation work while the plant remains in operation. By integrating new components into existing infrastructure in a carefully managed process, Voith will secure the plant’s reliable operation throughout the transition period. This step-by-step approach to replacing the plant’s entire control and electrical systems is key to maintaining plant availability and minimising the risk of unscheduled shutdowns during the extensive upgrades.
The Sima hydropower plant features two waterways and four generating units. The station has a total installed capacity of 1,120 MW and generates roughly 3,100 GWh of renewable energy annually. Under the contract, Voith will take responsibility for the modernisation of the existing control system. As part of the refurbishment, they will supply electrical and balance-of-plant equipment, including software that is developed and maintained by in-house specialists. The Sima hydropower plant will be equipped with new automation systems, electrical protection systems, new AC/DC systems and various medium voltage components including cabling.
Statkraft is Norway’s and Europe’s largest producer of renewable energy. Its hydropower plants generate roughly one-third of the country’s power output. Statkraft continues to invest in modernizing its hydropower fleet to support reliable renewable energy generation for the future. Voith has collaborated with Statkraft for more than 20 years.
Oeyvind Holm, head of sales Norway at Voith Hydro, said: “We have partnered with Statkraft for more than twenty years, which gives us in-depth knowledge of their requirements and a clear perspective on the complexities involved in the modernisation of the Sima plant. By taking full responsibility for this project, we are able to streamline processes, minimise risks, and ensure a smooth and rewarding experience for everyone involved. We are proud to support Statkraft’s commitment to ensuring reliable hydropower generation for the long term.”
Kristin Lindvik, power plant manager at Statkraft, said: “The Sima hydropower plant is an impressive example of engineering excellence that has been generating electricity since 1980. Our goal is to extend its lifetime in the most sustainable and efficient manner possible. It is crucial that modernizing of such a critical plant is performed safely and efficiently with minimal disruption to our operations and production of renewable power.”
