Ovarro's TBox supports market-ready hydrogen energy innovation

Ovarro's TBox supports market-ready hydrogen energy innovation Ovarro, a business unit of AMETEK's MCT Division, is helping bring an innovative hydrogen energy storage system closer to commercial deployment by integrating its TBox remote telemetry technology into a solution developed by Catalan start-up ATOM H2.

The containerised system converts surplus solar energy into hydrogen, stores it safely and then converts it back into electricity when required. Designed as a clean, reliable and emission-free alternative to diesel generators, it is particularly suited to critical infrastructure such as telecoms towers, along with off-grid applications where uninterrupted power is essential.

Having successfully completed technical validation and on-site pilot projects, ATOM H2 is now preparing for its first commercial installations. Ovarro's TBox technology forms a key part of the system's control architecture, providing monitoring, communications and remote management capabilities.

As demand continues to grow for dependable low-emission power sources, operators of critical infrastructure are increasingly looking beyond conventional diesel generators. ATOM H2's renewable energy storage solution has been developed to provide autonomous, continuous and stable power by harnessing excess solar energy and storing it in the form of hydrogen for use when renewable generation is unavailable.

To support commercial deployment, the company required a robust control platform capable of integrating equipment, monitoring performance and enabling secure remote communications. Working alongside Barcelona-based engineering partner Idneo, ATOM H2 integrated Ovarro's TBox remote telemetry unit (RTU) into the system.

The TBox RTU provides real-time monitoring, communications and remote management of the hydrogen production and storage system. Able to gather and transmit data from field devices and sensors to a central control centre, it provides operators with complete visibility of assets regardless of location. The units support both local and remote monitoring, while secure communications are delivered via the OpenVPN protocol to meet the demanding availability requirements of critical infrastructure applications.

Ovarro's Spanish distributor, Becolve Digital, supported the project through technical assistance and training, helping Idneo and ATOM H2 rapidly adopt the TBox technology.

By incorporating the RTU into its control architecture, ATOM H2 has established the monitoring and communications framework required to support commercial operation of its hydrogen energy solution. The system enables operational data to be collected from connected equipment and transmitted to a central control centre, supporting remote supervision and informed decision-making. This capability is particularly valuable for geographically dispersed and off-grid installations, where reliable communications and continuous equipment monitoring are essential.

Carlos Canet, operational marketing director at Becolve Digital, said: "ATOM H2 provides autonomous, continuous, stable power to mission-critical sites where downtime is not acceptable. In this context, the robustness, high availability and ability to integrate with different protocols make TBox an ideal solution for equipment with demanding availability and supervision requirements."

The project demonstrates how established telemetry technologies can be applied to emerging renewable energy applications, bringing proven monitoring and control capabilities to hydrogen energy storage systems.

David Pollock, channel manager at Ovarro, said: "TBox has been trusted to monitor and control critical infrastructure for decades, and this project demonstrates how it continues to evolve alongside the latest technologies. As an industry first, it is exciting to see TBox supporting an emerging clean energy application. Reliable telemetry and remote monitoring provide the seamless communications needed to support informed decision-making as these innovative systems move towards commercial deployment."

The integration gives ATOM H2 access to real-time remote monitoring and control, secure OpenVPN communications and centralised data collection from connected field equipment, supporting both local and remote supervision of the energy storage system.

ATOM H2 was recognised at the 2026 Mobile World Congress Barcelona as one of Catalonia's most promising start-ups and was also named a winner in the 'Challenges of Tomorrow' category of CaixaBank's EmprendeXXI Awards, organised through its DayOne technology division.
