Fronius simplifies path to standards-compliant welding

Fronius simplifies path to standards-compliant welding Fronius has expanded its range of products and services aimed at helping manufacturers meet increasingly demanding welding standards, offering support that spans welding procedure specifications, operator training and digital documentation for both manual and automated welding operations.

As manufacturers across sectors including steel fabrication, plant construction and rail vehicle production face growing requirements for quality assurance and traceability, the company says it is focused on making standards-compliant welding more accessible while reducing the time and cost associated with certification and documentation.

According to Fronius, compliance with recognised welding standards is essential not only for meeting regulatory requirements but also for ensuring consistent product quality and safety.

“Quality doesn’t come about by accident; it is the result of precise standards and high-quality welding,” said Franziska Eichhorn, strategic product manager at Fronius International GmbH.

However, achieving compliance can be a significant challenge for manufacturers. Certification processes, welder qualifications and the need for detailed documentation can place considerable demands on resources, particularly for small and medium-sized businesses.

To address this, Fronius offers a range of Standard Welding Procedure Specification (SWPS) packages designed to simplify the development of compliant welding procedures. These packages provide predefined, standards-compliant parameters covering factors such as material type, component thickness, filler metal selection and energy input.

The company says the approach allows users to establish welding procedures more quickly while reducing the cost and complexity associated with carrying out their own process certification tests.

A notable feature of the programme is the inclusion of SWPS packages developed specifically for automated and robotic welding applications. Covering steel and stainless-steel materials, the packages can be applied across collaborative robots, industrial robots and fully automated production systems.

“It’s only possible to guarantee lasting and efficient quality if the weld seams are reproducible and the manufacturing process is traceable. However, the costs of process certification are high, especially for small and medium-sized businesses,” Ms Eichhorn explained.

“Our cost-effective Fronius Standard Welding Procedure Specification packages make it easier to formulate a complete welding procedure specification.”

Fronius says its portfolio includes approved welding procedures for manual TIG welding of stainless-steel alloys, partly mechanised MAG welding of steel and stainless steel, and fully automated MAG welding processes. In many cases, the company says manufacturers can avoid the need for additional procedure testing, reducing both costs and implementation times.

While technology forms an important part of standards-compliant welding, Fronius stresses that operator expertise remains equally critical.

“A good welding procedure specification is only as good as its implementation,” said Ms Eichhorn. “On its own, technology is unable to guarantee quality. It’s the expertise of skilled welders, combined with hands-on training and ongoing development, that makes all the difference.”

Fronius 2 To support workforce development, the company has developed its Welducation training programme, which incorporates welding simulators, e-learning tools and on-site assessments. Fronius also provides internationally recognised qualifications and certifications for welders and machine operators, alongside machine calibration and safety inspection services.

The company has also invested heavily in digital tools designed to improve quality management and documentation. Its WeldCube Navigator software enables users to follow guided workflows and identify components and materials throughout the production process, while WeldCube Air assists supervisors with managing welding procedures, certifications and compliance documentation.

According to Fronius, digital management of welding data is becoming increasingly important as manufacturers seek greater transparency and traceability within their operations.

“Accurate digital documentation forms the foundation for sustainable quality assurance,” said Ms Eichhorn. “Complete traceability of process parameters makes it possible to identify and correct the causes of errors at an early stage. This prevents time-consuming and costly rework.”

With quality standards, automation and traceability becoming increasingly important across manufacturing industries, Fronius believes its combination of welding procedures, training services and digital documentation tools can help companies maintain compliance while improving efficiency.

The company says this integrated approach enables manufacturers to achieve consistent welding quality, whether processes are carried out manually, by robot or through fully automated production systems.
