Train of the future goes on display Earlier this month, Siemens unveiled a prototype of its new Inspiro train at the opening of an exhibition to mark the 150th anniversary of the London Underground. Costing £1 million per carriage, the train has been equipped to be driverless and weighs a third less than current models; it is also said to be more spacious and has air conditioning.

The German-based manufacturer has hinted that the trains, which are suitable for use on the Piccadilly, Bakerloo and Central lines, would be manufactured in the UK if a firm order was made. Earlier this year, Transport for London secured additional Government funding for the Underground, based on its claim that any new trains it ordered would be made by British-based firms.

The Going Underground exhibition continues at the Crystal exhibition centre in the Royal Victoria Docks until 8 January.
