The WTX range of solid-carbide drills from Sheffield-based WNT (UK) Ltd (
www.wnt.com) has been extended to include drills with flute lengths of 16- and 25-times diameter as standard.
These drills, which are available in diameters from 2 to 12mm and have a through-coolant facility as standard, are designed to make full use of the available flute length and can be used to full depth without the need for retraction or pecking cycles. The use of coolant at a minimum pressure of 30 bar is recommended.
The drills are suitable for use on steel, stainless steel and cast iron. However, to ensure optimum performance, they need to be used with a pre-drilled pilot hole that is 2xD deep and between 0.01-0.03mm larger than the hole to be drilled; and where cross-holes or break-outs are encountered, the feed rate should be reduced by 50%. Subject to the drill length and diameter, the cutting data for drilling steel is 85-105m/min surface speed and 0.05-0.15mm/rev feed.
WNT (UK) managing director Tony Pennington says: “The ability to drill holes of this diameter to length ratio without the need to peck will make a significant improvement in cycle times and help our customers to remain competitive.”
