Halesowen-based Sandvik Coromant is now offering tooling dedicated to the machining of valve-seat pockets in oil and gas sector applications (
www.sandvik.coromant.com).
Comprising a combination of an elliptical Silent Tools adapter and a CoroTurn SL cutting head, the solution is designed to overcome issues such as narrow flow-bore diameters, tendencies to vibration and long overhangs.
The challenges of machining valve-seat pockets in the oil and gas industry encouraged Sandvik Coromant to create a tool with extended radial reach that offers high levels of security, repeatability and performance during back-turning operations.
With elliptical Silent Tools adaptors designed to access deep seats, plus CoroTurn SL cutting heads featuring a lightweight structure, the tooling serves to minimise vibration and offer extended reach in both roughing and finishing operations.
A recent back-turning trial that involved machining ‘cladded’ Inconel 625 highlights the potential benefits. Using an elliptical Silent Tools adapter, a 25mm CoroTurnSL cutting head and a Coromant Capto C6 tool-holder for one roughing and two finishing cuts, the final pass achieved a surface finish of 0.2Ra; this was produced at a cutting speed of 27m/min, a feed rate of 0.02mm/rev and a 0.1mm depth of cut.
