Now available from Warwick Machine Tools (
www.warwickmachinetools.co.uk) is the new range of ONA AV wire-cut EDM machines.
This includes two compact machines: the ONA AV25 with axis travels of 400, 300 and 250mm in X, Y and Z; and the larger ONA AV35 model with travels of 600, 400 and 400mm respectively. Both machines have travels of 120mm in the U and V axes.
The layout of these two models has reduced the machine footprint by around 20% compared with existing machines of similar capacity, says ONA.
Using a modular design concept, the larger-scale AV machines in the range are designed to cut bulky components. They start with the ONA AV60, with cutting speeds of up to 450mm2/min.
It has axis travels of 800 and 600mm in X and Y, while the Z axis can be specified as 500, 600, 700 or 800mm; workpieces can weigh up to 5,000kg. The AV80 can accommodate the same weight but extends the axis travels to 1,000mm in X, and 600, 800 or 1,000mm in Y. The Z-axis travels are the same as the AV60.
Meanwhile, both the AV100 and AV130 accommodate loads up to 10,000kg on the table and can be specified in a range of configurations. The AV100 has travels of 1,500mm in X, 1,000 or 1,300mm in Y and 600, 700 or 800mm in Z.
The AV130 extends the X-axis travel to 2,000mm. All four large machine tools feature U- and V-axis travels of 500mm and a 30deg taper cut capability.
ONA has also developed a new CNC with integral CAD/CAM for the AV range. The CNC makes it possible to control up to eight axes simultaneously; it has a 23in touch-screen monitor.
A 3-D viewer graphically displays the workpiece, cutting position and wire path, while 3-D set-up with optional touch probing is also supported.
A new generator that monitors operations and uses digital technology to control the discharge process can deliver cutting-performance and surface-finish benefits; compared with previous ONA wire EDM machines, AV machines offer increases in cutting speed of up to 40%, while precision is improved by 20%.
Also featured is a new super-fine finishing module that achieves finishes of 0.1µm Ra in hard metals and 0.12µm Ra in carbon steel.
In addition, the AV range incorporates new corner and profile control systems, linear scales with a resolution of 0.1µm, and a protection system that can detect impacts as light as 8N.
There is also a new wire-threading system with enhanced functions, such as re-threading while submerged in a cut gap on a workpiece up to 150mm thick. Automatic threading with wires as small as 0.07mm in diameter can be achieved.
Finally, a new energy management system is said to reduce electricity consumption by up to 30% during the cutting process.
