Global company Henkel Adhesive Technologies has introduced Bonderite M-AD 2000A, a new additive for the anodising process that makes the surface treatment of aluminium more efficient and sustainable. The additive enables anodising baths to operate at temperatures of up to 24°C — significantly higher than the conventional 18–20°C range. Thereby it reduces the energy required for cooling and extends bath life, all without compromising the quality or performance of the anodised layer.

Bonderite M-AD 2000A was specifically developed for companies involved in aluminium anodising, whether as a surface treatment or as part of a pre-anodising process. The focus lies on improving process and energy efficiency — operating the anodising bath at higher temperatures significantly reduces the need for cooling.

Disposal and replenishment

At the same time, the additive helps lower suphuric acid consumption by around 25%. In addition, aluminium loss is reduced by 25%, and process times are shortened by an average of 15%. The more stable bath chemistry also extends the service life by up to 25%, minimising the need for disposal and replenishment.

Darshan Mehta, Henkel’s business development manager (Light Metal Treatment), said: “Our customers are looking for ways to make their production processes more sustainable and cost-effective without compromising on quality. Bonderite M-AD 2000A delivers exactly that — an additive that saves costs, energy, and materials while ensuring consistent results.”

The Qualanod certification underscores the additive’s durability and high quality — even under real-world conditions such as long-term outdoor weathering tests conducted in coastal regions like the Hook of Holland and Genoa. The product is now approved for use by all member companies of the international Qualanod network.

Initial industrial trials under real production conditions confirm the projected benefits — significant energy savings, reduced chemical usage, and consistent coating results. With the successful completion of testing and international approval, Bonderite M-AD 2000A is now available in Europe and will be rolled out gradually to markets worldwide — wherever aluminium anodising plays a critical role in production.
