Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia have signed an agreement to seek funding from the European Union to re-open the 177.9km Una railway line between Novi Grad and Knin.
This was once the shortest rail route between Zagreb and the Adriatic port of Split, but it has been out of use since being damaged during the wars of 1991-96.
It crosses the border multiple times, with 119.4km of the route in Bosnia-Herzegovina and 58.5km in Croatia.
The line was managed by Željeznice Republike Srpske, Railways of the Federation of Bosnia & Herzegovina and HŽ Infra in Croatia. The agreement was signed in Zagreb on 11 May by Bosnia-Herzegovina’s Minister of Communications & Transport (Ismir Jusko) and Croatia’s Minister of Sea, Transport & Infrastructure (Oleg Butković).
Back in February, the latter’s Ministry announced that its plan to modernise and electrify the 24.2km Zaprešić-Zabok line north of Zagreb had been backed by the JASPERS technical assistance partnership, which is managed by the European Investment Bank and co-sponsored by the European Commission and European Bank for Reconstruction & Development.
