New high-powered horizontal boring mill Fermat Machine Tool, a European manufacturer of boring machines, is launching the WFT 13R CNC horizontal boring mill at EMO (Hall 11, Stand D07).

Marketed and supported in the UK by Hinckley-based 2D CNC Machinery Ltd (www.2dcnc.co.uk), the WFT 13R is said by the manufacturer to combine power with the ability to absorb high axial forces — and to have the most precise table configuration in its class.

The machine features five linear axes and a rotary B axis. Travels in X, Y and Z are 4,000, 3,000 and 2,000mm respectively, with the machine’s W and V axes offering travels of 730 and 700mm.

The 1,800 x 2,600mm table provides a 20-tonne load capacity and incorporates a zero-point work-clamping system. Also integrated in the table are two planetary gearboxes, two servo motors and two pinions that operate in a master-and-slave relationship to prevent backlash and limit issues such as the effects of ‘stiction’.

Moreover, a fully servo-controlled rotary-table option provides continuous B-axis rotation for simultaneous contouring with the X, Y, Z, V or W axes.

The machine’s headstock houses a 130mm-diameter spindle that is powered by a 41kW drive. A rigid stress-relieved column supports the Z-axis movement, with the workpiece on the rotary table that travels in the X axis.

The Y-axis ballscrew is 80mm in diameter to further contribute to precision and rigidity. Also featured are Heidenhain linear scales, spindle monitoring and a Heidenhain iTNC 530 CNC system.
