Larger version of Haas 5-axis machining centre

Larger version of Haas 5-axis machining centre Offering the same proven performance as the Haas UMC-750 but with larger travels and a bigger trunnion table, the new UMC-1000 is designed for the 3+2 machining and simultaneous five-axis machining of large parts (www.haas.co.uk).

It features a 1,016 x 635 x 635mm work envelope, a 40-taper 22.4kW 10,000rev/min (122Nm of cutting torque) inline direct-drive spindle and a servo-driven 50+1 side-mounted tool changer.

The trunnion table offers +35 to -110deg of tilt and 360deg of rotation. The Haas WIPS (Wireless Intuitive Probing System) is fitted as standard; this gives easy on-screen directions to guide new users through the process, while experienced users have access to custom probe routines.

Meanwhile, Dynamic Work Offsets and Tool Centre Point Control simplify set-ups for both 3+2 axis machining and five-axis simultaneous machining, by allowing users to program the component relative to a work location of their choice, rather than relative to the intersection of the rotary axes, thereby eliminating multiple visits back to the CAM system to adjust the component location.

In addition to the standard model, Haas has also introduced a Super Speed version — the UMC-1000SS.

This offers 30.5m/min rapids, an integrated high-speed dual-axis trunnion table (170deg/sec feed rate) and a 15,000rev/min inline direct-drive spindle.

Both machines are equipped with through-spindle coolant, an auxiliary coolant filter and a programmable coolant nozzle.

A heavy-duty steel belt-type chip conveyor removes swarf from the machine quickly and discharges it with minimal coolant carry-out.

The conveyor can be activated via M-code or directly from the control pendant; there are also settings to control the interval and duration of the conveyor cycle for automatic operation. Smart sensing technology automatically reverses the conveyor if a jam occurs.

Meanwhile, the Haas Next Generation Control can send e-mail and SMS text notifications to multiple contacts, regarding the operating status of the machine.

In addition, 1GB of memory allows a large number of programs to be stored, eliminating the need for an external device to FNC or DNC the program; there is also a high-speed machining module that lets UMC-series machines cut at maximum feed rate where possible, while slowing just enough where necessary to make sure complex part geometry is maintained.

A 2min video of the new UMC-100 can be seen at the Web site (www.haas.co.uk/resources/video-gallery/cnc-machining-demos).
