BIG Kaiser has formed a collaboration with Kistler, whereby the former’s ‘Mega New Baby Chuck’ and the latter’s rotating dynamometer RCD Type 9171A are combined to deliver high levels of accuracy in cutting-force measurement.
The new chuck, which is available in the UK from Tamworth-based Industrial Tooling Corporation Ltd (
www.itc-ltd.co.uk), offers higher precision than traditional ER clamping systems and delivers ‘superior run-out accuracy’.
BIG Kaiser has adapted the interface on the Mega New Baby Chuck to ensure that it connects securely and accurately to the Kistler rotating dynamometer, thereby ensuring that customers can achieve noticeably lower radial run-out errors, while benefitting from the improved cutting-force measurement accuracy that enables manufacturers to increase the lifetime of cutting edges — and replace tools before they break (increased forces at the cutting edge indicate that a failure is imminent).
The Type 9171A is a piezoelectric dynamometer for use in high-performance cutting applications, measuring high levels of force and torque at speeds up to 12,000rev/ min, thereby allowing machining processes to be analysed and optimised while obtaining information on tool wear.
It is particularly suited to multi-component force and torque measurements on rotating tools during milling and drilling.
The Mega New Baby Chuck, which accommodates diameters up to 20mm, has a notch-free ‘Mega nut’ that ‘prevents vibration and reduces noise levels’.
It is tightened using a ‘Mega wrench’ that applies force evenly along the entire nut periphery.
